GUADALUPE MOUNTAINS NATIONAL PARK: its story and its scenery. by John Barnett.
History, geology, wildlife of national park in the Texas desert. The human story here is documented with artifacts to have begun at least by 12,000 years ago. These people did not farm and used caves for shelter. Spanish explorations came through the area as did the Butterfield stage running from Tennessee and Missouri to San Francisco, California, with the foundation of a station still extant. Geology is explained from a Permian time period coral reef in the sea to the limestones of the peak today. Plants and animals are presented along with information on hiking, even to the mountain summit. Color photographs, 32 large-format pages.
