THE CAÑONS OF THE COLORADO-- the 1869 discovery voyage down the Colorado River. THE CAÑONS OF THE COLORADO-- the 1869 discovery voyage down the Colorado River. by Major John Wesley Powell.
Note the word cañons in the title would today be spelled canyons but we have preserved the usage from the time when this voyage was made and written about by the major himself. From Wyoming, into Colorado, through Utah, to Arizona and the Grand Canyon, and to Nevada--this was the journey of the "Colorado River Exploring Expedition", what Powell called his group of 9 men and 4 boats as they began charting what was the last major unexplored part of the then United States. The trip was not only scientific in its goals, but it naturally became a grand adventure, with two of their party opting to leave the expedition before attempting a furious cascade, only to be killed by Indians. Much of the land and scenery which they drifted or dashed past is today included in National Park System areas.
Illustrations are by Thomas Moran and others. 64 pages. See sample pages.

FINDING FAULT IN CALIFORNIA: an earthquake tourist's guide. FINDING FAULT IN CALIFORNIA: an earthquake tourist's guide. by Susan Elizabeth Hough.
California has plenty of faults—seismic faults that is. They shear the Golden State into ribbons and have largely crafted California's geologically diverse and dynamic landscape. With humor and ease, Finding Fault in California leads the earthquake curious to the state's most accessible, active, and earth-shaping faults and tells the stories behind the major temblors that have shaken the region.
The book begins with a discussion about what faults are and how to recognize them. The geologic tours follow, exploring the seismic hazards of the Los Angeles Basin, the San Francisco Bay Area, central California, the Mojave Desert, a neighborhood that is slowly being wrenched in two by the creeping Calaveras fault, and a now-landscaped surface rupture from the 1971 San Fernando quake in a McDonald's parking lot—giving new meaning to an order for burgers and shakes. Photos, maps, and diagrams, most with precise GPS coordinates, illustrate the conversational text. Entertaining sidebars highlight the often ingenious methods of modern fault-finding researchers.  368 pages, 6 x9.
