JOHN MUIR IN YOSEMITE. by Shirley Sargent;
foreword by John Muir's granddaughter.
Yosemite gave Muir purpose and goals
that changed his life and that of the nation. This book presents his early years
in Yosemite and his struggles to preserve the wilderness. To students of Muir,
John Muir and Yosemite are synonymous. To Shirley Sargent, historian, long time
resident and authority on Yosemite, telling the story of Muir and his love
affair with the Valley was a must. "She has related the story of John Muir's
residency, his work, studies, accomplishments, and struggles which were the
prelude to his life's work in geology, conservation, and the establishment of
National Parks, with freshness and enthusiasm. She dispels some old legends with
accurate research and has documented for all time the true facts concerning one
of America's outstanding preservationists." (Jean Hanna Clark,
granddaughter of John Muir.) "The Call of the Wild", "First Summer in the
Sierra", "A Lifetime of Love Work", "Pathway to Immortality".

JOHN MUIR, IN HIS OWN WORDS-- a
book of quotations. Compiled and Edited by
Peter Browning.
Earth has no sorrow that
earth cannot heal.
The best of John Muir—332 quotations, the distillation of his thought, the
essence of his beliefs. Muir was the foremost conservationist of his time—nature
writer, social critic, realist, a romantic, a visionary. A long-needed collection that features an excellent
subject index. Painstaking bibliographic references make this an invaluable
addition to one's Muir library." (Yosemite Conservancy.)
No single quotation can possibly serve to illuminate his philosophy,
but if asked for a succinct statement of his beliefs, Muir might have said: "In every walk with nature
one receives far more than he seeks", "How narrow we selfish, conceited
creatures are in our sympathies! How blind to the rights of all the rest of
creation!" "The clearest way into the
Universe is through a forest wilderness", "The battle we have fought, and
are still fighting...is a part of the eternal conflict between right and
wrong, and we cannot expect to see the end of it". "Sheep are driven into Hetch
Hetchy every spring, about the same time that a nearly equal number of
tourists are driven into Yosemite; another coincident which is remarkably
suggestive." 112 pages.

THE MAP THAT CHANGED THE WORLD: William Smith and the birth of modern geology. by Simon Winchester.
As a digger of canals in England in 1793, William Smith noticed differing layers in the soil and that these layers contained fossils unique within each layer. Following the fossil clues, for twenty years he traced where they occurred throughout England and produced a hand-painted map more than 8 feet tall and 6 feet wide to show the geology of the kingdom. What the thus created is the geologic map, a tool that has now been used to document much of the Earth's rocks and their fossils and minerals to both discover processes of faulting and folding and in locating mineral deposits through association and pattern and even to assists in locating railroad and highway corridors, reservoirs with dams, and pipelines. Drawings, color geological maps, 348 pages, index.
